Two Different Types of Termites
Subterranean Termites
Subterranean Termites live underground, leaving the soil to eat wood. One Subterranean Termite colony can infest multiple structures at the same time. These Termite Colonies can be 100 times the size of Drywood Termite Colonies. This means damage can be done considerably faster. These termites enter houses through crawlspaces, plumbing openings or cracks in slabs. They usually proceed undetected up the walls causing substantial damage. In many cases, you are unaware that you have these Termites until they build a mud tube on your drywall or during the Spring-time, they might swarm into your house.
Drywood Termites
Drywood Termites are a species of Termite that live in the wood members being consumed and don’t require access to soil. This Termite is a serious economic pest, and causes millions of dollars worth of damage through its range. Colonies contain up to 10,000 Termites working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Usually the first indication that these Termites are around, is their pellets that they push from wood. During the Fall, Drywood Termites will send out Swarmer Termites to start new colonies. It is very common for multiple Drywood Termite colonies to infest the same structure. If you are seeing signs of Drywood Termites at two completely separate areas, chances are that they are two different colonies that established themselves at completely different times (even years apart)
